Step 1. Whether you are ready to make that move or not, you should really have your resume updated just in case that outstanding opportunity comes across your desk.
Step 2. Update your LinkedIn profile with your expertise, education, training as well as you background from your resume. An effective LinkedIn Profile should be a professional presentation of yourself.
Step 3. Stay active on LinkedIn to assist in promoting your brand. Add connections and accept other connections to build your network.
Step 4. Join Groups on LinkedIn that will keep you informed about your industry or Specialty.
Step 5. Follow specific companies and organizations that you are interested in.
Step 6. Post articles or comments to enhance your activity and exposure.
Step 7. Once you are ready to start your job search, whether Active or Passively, you need to start somewhere. One of the best starting points are with LinkedIn, Careerbuilder or Indeed.
Step 8. If you have not been active in the current job market, you will first find that you may experience information overload. Too many potential positions, a laundry list of qualifications that make you wonder if you’re qualified, and then there is that resume submittal process.
Step 9. Seek out an experienced recruiting firm that specializes in your field. If you are a Network Engineer or Software Developer you want a firm that specializes in those fields. Would you go to an Eye Doctor for a problem with your Knee or Hip, absolutely not.
Step 10. Look for a job when you have a job! Great advice especially when you find yourself in a competitive job market. Employers are very interested when you are employed vs. unemployed.
Step 11. Research the prospective company via the Web and look for potential connections that may currently work for the company on LinkedIn. You may in fact find you have a mutual connection.
Step 12. Once your resume or profile has been submitted there is always a going to be a period of anticipation and wonder whether the company has an interest. Don’t be discouraged by anywhere from a few days to a month before you receive a response.
Step 13. The Interview Preparation. Once you have been contacted by your Recruiting Firm regarding an interview, it is their job to prepare you fully for your interview. If not you have picked the wrong firm. If we are working with you, plan on receiving both a Phone and an Email preparation. Most interviews start with a screening phone interview. Then an onsite interview or video interview. Plan on two to three interviews for most high level Information Technology positions.
